How to turn a history podcast into YouTube videos with real historical pictures

Checked October 29, 2026

SHORT ANSWER

A recorded episode already has what a history video needs most: a narration full of names, places and dates. What it lacks is a picture for each of them. You can upload over your show art, which YouTube does for you from your RSS feed but which shows one still image for the whole episode. You can find archive pictures and edit them yourself, which creators put at one to two hours of searching per minute of video. You can hire an editor, about $100 for a 15-minute video at the median in Reddit hiring posts. Or you can use Cutaway, which we make: it matches each line to a period picture, map or label, for $2.90 to $4.90 per 15 minutes of video.

What 15 minutes of video costs each way

OptionWhat viewers seeCost for 15 minutes of video
Show art from your RSS feedOne still image for the whole episodeFree, set up once
Edit it yourselfPictures you choose for each part of the storyFree software, plus 15 to 30 hours of picture searching
Hire an editorDepends on the editor and your briefAbout $100 (middle half of quotes: $50 to $200)
CutawayA picture, map or label for each line, timed to your voice$2.90 as a founding member, $4.90 on the regular plan

The editor figure is the median of the 96 hiring posts that named a price per video, where the typical video was 15 minutes long (see our guide to editor costs). The Cutaway figure is 15 of the 150 minutes included in the $29 or $49 monthly plan.

Option 1: upload over your show art

If your podcast has an RSS feed, YouTube Studio can import it. YouTube then uses your show art to create a static-image video for each episode you choose and uploads it to your channel. The feature is available in some regions only, and you confirm ownership with a code sent to the email address in your feed.

This puts your back catalog on YouTube with no editing. Viewers see the same image for the whole episode, so the channel works as another place to listen.

Option 2: edit it yourself

A free editor such as DaVinci Resolve is enough: place a picture for each part of the story, add a slow zoom, and cut on the words. Most of the time goes into finding the pictures. For history, the main free sources are Wikimedia Commons, the Library of Congress and the US National Archives; our guide to public domain sources says what each one allows. CC BY and CC BY-SA pictures need a credit in the description (how to write it).

Creators describing their own process put the picture search at one to two hours for each minute of video. At that rate, 15 minutes of video means 15 to 30 hours of searching before the edit starts.

Option 3: hire an editor

In 299 Reddit hiring posts for narrated long videos, channel owners offered a median of $100 per video, and half offered between $50 and $200. The typical video was 15 minutes long. In 97 of those posts the editor was also expected to find the pictures.

Option 4: Cutaway

Cutaway is the tool we make. It edits from a recorded English narration, which is what a podcast episode is.

  1. Upload the episode audio.
  2. Within 24 hours you get a storyboard: each line of the episode with the picture, map or on-screen label chosen for it, and the picture's license.
  3. Swap any picture you don't want before anything is rendered.
  4. You receive the edited video with captions, chapters and a description that credits every picture.

By default, Cutaway uses only pictures and clips whose license is clear, such as public domain, CC0 and Creative Commons, plus any files you upload. If you choose to include clips with unknown rights, each one is marked in the storyboard, the copyright risk is yours, and any of them can be swapped for a public-domain picture. Each plan includes 150 minutes of finished video a month, which is ten 15-minute videos. The first 15 minutes of your first video are edited for free, with no credit card.

Chapters for long episodes

YouTube turns timestamps in the description into chapters when the first one is 00:00, there are at least three in ascending order, and each chapter is at least 10 seconds long. If your show notes already list the segments of an episode, those timestamps can go straight into the description.

Monetization

If you plan to earn from the videos, read our summary of YouTube's monetization policies. Narration you researched and wrote yourself is the clearest evidence of original content. Reading someone else's text is on YouTube's list of what it does not monetize.

SHORT ANSWER

Cutaway
