AI documentary editors that work from your own voiceover: Cutaway, Cliptude and VidRush
Checked October 30, 2026
An AI documentary editor takes a narration and matches each line with archive pictures, footage, maps and on-screen labels, then cuts them into a video. Three tools that do this from your own voiceover are Cutaway, which we make ($0.19 to $0.33 per finished minute, first 15 minutes free, footage with a clear license by default), Cliptude (about $0.38 per minute billed monthly, 57 languages, can also write and narrate) and VidRush (from $2.18 per minute billed monthly, writes and narrates a whole video from a prompt). The biggest differences are where the footage comes from and who writes the credits.
What an AI documentary editor does
A documentary-style YouTube video is mostly narration over pictures: archive photos, old film, maps, and labels with names and dates. The editing work is finding a picture for each line and cutting on the words. An AI documentary editor does that part. Some tools also write the script and generate the voice; the three below all accept a narration you recorded yourself.
Three tools side by side
| Cutaway | Cliptude | VidRush | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price per finished minute with your own voice | $0.19 (founding members, $29 a month) or $0.33 ($49 a month) | About $0.37 to $0.38 billed monthly, about $0.30 billed yearly | $2.18, $1.75 or $1.56 billed monthly; your own voice does not lower it |
| Free trial | First 15 minutes of your first video, no credit card | Not stated on its site | None |
| Writes the script and voice | Optional: from a topic, using Wikipedia articles; four English AI voices | Yes, plus voice cloning; 57 languages | Yes, by default |
| Footage by default | Public domain, CC0 and Creative Commons only; clips and pictures with unknown rights only if you turn them on | Stock, Creative Commons and public-domain archives, and web scraping that includes YouTube clips and web images not filtered by license, all on by default | You choose: commercial stock such as Storyblocks, Creative Commons and public-domain archives, the open web |
| Credits for Creative Commons pictures | Written for you | You check the rights and write them | Listed in a pop-up; you copy them into your description |
| Before the video is rendered | A storyboard of every line and its picture; swap any picture | Script, voice, style and a credit estimate | A quote with format, length, voice and estimated credits |
| Refunds | A refund if you are not satisfied with your first edit | Only for confirmed technical failures, prorated | Generally only for technical failures |
| Narration languages | English | 57 languages | Not consistent across its pages |
Cliptude was checked on October 28, 2026 and VidRush on October 27, 2026, from their own pricing pages and documentation (see sources). Prices and features change, so check their sites for the current details. We make Cutaway.
Which one fits
- Cutaway if you record your own narration in English, want to see every picture before the video is made, and want only footage with a clear license plus credits written for you.
- Cliptude if you need many languages, voice cloning, avatars or animation styles, and you are prepared to check the rights of the footage yourself.
- VidRush if you want a whole video generated from one prompt and licensed stock footage such as Storyblocks included in the price.
What to check before you choose
- The price per minute with your own voice. Some plans price the whole pipeline, so bringing your own narration does not make a video cheaper.
- Where the footage comes from by default. Web scraping finds more pictures, but some of them may not be cleared for commercial use. Our guide to public domain sources says what each archive allows.
- Who writes the credits. CC BY and CC BY-SA pictures need a credit in the description (how to write it).
- What you see before rendering. Fixing a wrong picture is cheaper before the video is made than after.
- Monetization. Narration you researched and wrote yourself is the clearest evidence of original content (YouTube's policies, summarized).
How Cutaway works
- Upload your voiceover, paste a script, or start from a topic.
- The agent transcribes the narration, plans a shot for each line and searches public-domain and Creative Commons archives for period pictures, footage and maps.
- You get a storyboard: each line with its picture and license. The agent asks only about the shots it is unsure of.
- You receive the edited video with captions, chapters, title ideas and a description that credits every picture.
Narration is English only for now. Each plan includes 150 minutes of finished video a month.
能用你自己配音的有三个:我们做的 Cutaway(每分钟成片 0.19 到 0.33 美元,前 15 分钟免费,默认只用授权清楚的素材)、Cliptude(按月付每分钟约 0.38 美元,57 种语言,也能写稿和配音)和 VidRush(按月付每分钟 2.18 美元起,从一句提示词写稿、配音、做整条视频)。
| Cutaway | Cliptude | VidRush | |

Cutaway
