How much it costs to hire an editor for a 15-minute YouTube documentary
Checked October 27, 2026
About $100 per video. In 96 Reddit hiring posts for narrated long-form videos that named a price per video, the median was $100 and half were between $50 and $200 (the lowest was $5, the highest $600). The typical video in these posts was 15 minutes long and the typical channel wanted 4 a month, so a weekly channel pays around $400 a month at the median.
Where the numbers come from
We collected hiring posts from 8 subreddits where YouTubers hire editors, including r/FindVideoEditors, r/HireAnEditor, r/VideoEditors_forhire, r/CreatorServices and r/YouTubeEditorsForHire, over the 120 days to October 2026. 299 of them were for long videos built on a narration: documentaries, history, science, true crime and explainers. A language model read each post and recorded the pay, the length and what the editor had to do. When a post didn't say something, it is left out of that figure.
| What | Posts that said | Median | Middle half |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pay per video | 96 | $100 | $50 to $200 |
| Pay per minute of video | 29 | $5 | $3 to $12 |
| Video length | 131 | 15 minutes | 10 to 20 minutes |
| Videos per month | 81 | 4 |
What editors are asked to do
- Find the pictures and clips: 97 posts asked the editor to find them; 41 said the channel would supply them.
- Visual style: motion graphics came up in 102 posts, archive images in 71, stock footage in 52, maps in 28 and AI images or video in 20.
- Extras: captions in 31 posts, music and sound effects in 24, Shorts in 16 and thumbnails in 14.
Editors see the rates differently. One editor replying to a hiring post said the going rate starts at $25 a minute, or $200 to $350 a video.
How long the work takes
Few posts say how many hours an edit takes. Creators describing their own process put the footage search alone at one to two hours for each minute of video. In an r/NewTubers thread on the subject, one wrote that even the first 30 seconds to a minute of a video could take one or two hours of searching.
Other options
Doing it yourself costs the hours above. Cutaway, which we make, costs $29 a month for founding members or $49 a month on the regular plan, for up to 150 minutes of finished video, which works out at $2.90 to $4.90 per 15-minute video. It finds and checks the pictures and edits to your voiceover; you still write and record the narration. The first 15 minutes of your first video are free.

我们收集了 8 个 YouTube 博主招剪辑师的版块里,截至 2026 年 10 月的 120 天内的招聘帖,包括 r/FindVideoEditors、r/HireAnEditor、r/VideoEditors_forhire、r/CreatorServices 和 r/YouTubeEditorsForHire。
